Yep, me again with another prob. Noticed Thursday evening that one of these fish had a swollen tummy, thought maybe pregnant. Friday night it had what i can only describe as a straggly turd coming from it's anus: not the usual worm-like excreta, more like several thin strands trailing for about an inch, and then it dropped off. Thought nothing more of it but kept an eye on it just in case. Well, same thing now, large tummy (although not as bloated as before), normal shaped turd only it's a red/pink colour. This can't be right, so has anyone any ideas on this? The fish behaviour isn't any different from it's usual lively swimming.

U might be feeding them too much. When u feed your fish it should only take them 2 minutes at most to eat all the food. If this is true thats why u had alot of dirt in your filter, Your filter was sucking in alot of this uneaten food where it was left to decay and could also be the cause of your water quality problem as well. How much and how often do u feed your fish?

6 days once in morning, once in evening, 7th day no food. Got 5 other Danios and neither they or any other fish are doing the same.....? I only feed small amount, making sure there's no remaining food after a few minutes

I think you should cut back on feeding for a start feed maybe every second day,as for your danio what colour is its poo? also look into your tank from a top view and tell me what its scales look like they may be sticking out?

I thought dropsy myself but not sure, hence this post. The Danio (1 of 6) has been fine last few days, no repeat of strange turds, no scales sticking out, swimming/ eating/ behaving just like the others. Still not sure what was wrong, but I'm keeping it under observation. I am certain overfeeding is not the case.

Hi Karen, it's belly is larger and more white/ silvery in comparison to the others, but not bloated like it was the other night. I'm tempted to think that maybe it is pregnant...

Danio's dont get pregnant as such they are egg scatterers which means she just drops eggs, females are plumper than males so maybe thats what it is.

DUH! Yeah, should have done my homework (again). Up to now I've only got experience of livebearers, so time to get my books out and learn some more about the different fish I'm keeping. Thank you

I am now thinking it is a female with eggs. The other five are longer and more slender, whereas this one has a deeper belly and is shorter. I don't know if colouration is normally different between male and female, but all six are the same. And there has been no recurrence of the strange turd.
