I have seen fluorescent tubes in Lfs's go as high as 58watt, but there 5 ft long. Higher the wattage, longer the tube is. U can get more powerful metal halide lighting for marine tanks, but i think that would be overkill in a tropical aquarium. This may help, get lighting reflectors for your fluorescent tubes to increase lighting.

what size tank do you have? jp is right, the higher the watt the longer the tube. what type of tube do you have. i.e. day light etc. and what make? i can only get a 15 watt for my tank so i installed a second light and different tubes plus reflectos like jp said. the outcome was amazingly different in brightness and color.
