that depends on how far you are now spitfire. do you have your fish yet? did you get your plants? what have you got in the tank? there is a lot of cleaning to be done b4 you put sand into a tank. taking out the stones and adding sand will also effect the cycleling of your tank so you will have to wait for it to cycle again.

if you have no fish and two live plants and assuming the plants are doing ok, then to change the stones for sand so early in the cycleling process it could undo what you have already built up by taking away any nitryfing bactieria. plus the sand will take a lot of cleaning and rinsing b4 you can put it into the tank and will proberbly still give off a lot of dust for days after.
