:hi: i havent been around for a while but hopefully i will be around more :)well i have a question i plan on changing from gravel to sand and my problem is i have livebearing snails in my tank with the gravel and i dont want to lose them but how am i gonna get all the snails out of the gravel there is a tone of them and lots of baby ones which i would never be able to find in the gravel so i need some ideas on getting all of them out. Thanks in advance.

hi jon, nice to see you back. you gona have a hell of a job trying to save every single snail. only thing i can think of is to take so much gravel at a time and sieve through it to remove as many as poss, then take another scoop and do the same. either way it gona be a long hard task.

You could siphon water from the tank whilst vacuuming the gravel. I would imagine that would give you the snails in the water then you just remove the snails from the water. Would the snails survive? Just a idea.

That will be a tough job but you could try and use some cucumber snails love it and you should find the cucumber covererd in snails after a while,i really dont think you will get every single one though.

Hi Jon,just a quick tip with the sand, argos do childs play sand which I am lead to believe is good for aquaria, rather cheap at about 3.75euro for 15kg,guess thats about 2.50sterling.I got mine at atlantic homecare,a lot cheaper than buying from your lfs.

Thanks for the tips on sand dave i thought i could only use sand that was bought in a fish shop and its costs a fortune for a small bag. Now the snails i do relise i wont be able to get all of them out of the gravel so i think i will try and pick out what i can and then i will put some cucumber in and try and get the small ones i cant find to be on the cucumber.

I'm not actually sure, but read a bit online from a few lads who breed various corys and they reccommended it,so figured it must be ok.I monitor my water, and it dosnt seem to have any effect on it.

What colour is it?
PS
doesn't matter i did a goggle search, seems this play sand is made from quartz, So it probably wouldn't be any problems when using it in aquariums as substrate.
