its obviously not bog wood as it wood sink(pardin the pun) cant think of the top of my head the name of stuff you got. just be carfull though cos if your pH is at a low 6.2 adding bog wood will reduce it even further which will not be good for the fis.

Maybe its dirftwood which has to be soaked for a while first or it will float.

soak it in some salt water, The salt will kill off anything nasties on the wood, rinse the wood off in fresh water when its ready to go into your tank.

After reading mralgaes post i changed my mind i think its a bad idea to add it if it will lower my ph i didnt realise it would do that, how does it lower a ph and how does everyone get away with put wood, stones and decorations in their tank without affecting their tanks?

fishgirl what you need to do is double check water stats & make sure pH is at 6.2. if it is then that dont mean you cant put wood in the tank. you can get artificial wood which doesnt effect stats. on the other hand there are ways to increase the pH of the water in the tank. but i would NOT recomend the ''proper Ph'' type of additives. the other way is to add the likes of ''baking soda'' to raise the pH BUT that will also raise the KH as well so you have to be very carefull on how mush you add and when you add it.

i havent tested my water yet but i will tomorrow so i will know for sure then about a ph but i think if its still the same as last time i would risk putting in the real wood i will buy fake wood.i do plan to add live plants soon too will that affect a ph much?

you are one of the lucky ones having low ph, you prob have low gh/kh also. low ph can be raised were as high pH is harder to lower. most true aquatic plants come from low pH waters so you shouldnt have any bother on that one. you can add bog wood with not to much bother, it depends on how much work you realy want to put in to keeping everything in the best of condition. but once you start adding things to alter the water stats you MUST keep up with it or disaster is on the cards. i would start off by getting the tank running properly, checking the stats and doing water changes. then with the stats you have start looking for what fish and plants fit into or close to them.
