I was planning on buying new rocks for my tank but now ive come across some in the garden will these be ok to use?

I am not 100%, but My SIL told me not to use things that were not specifically for tanks. For fear that something may be released into your water that could harm the fish.

Put Vinegar on the rock. If it sizzles its Alkaline.

Dont foret to scrub the rock with boiling water. You can also use bleach, then rinse it and place in a bucket of a strong de-chlorinator mix for a few days then rinse again.

actually if it sizzles that means that it's got calcium deposits on it which isn't good because the calcium will dissolve into the water as large particles and that can irritate the fishes gills... so basic rule of thumb is "if it sizzles, don't use it"

It wont release that much calcium into Alkaline water. infact it will release very little.It only sizles because your mixing acid with alkaline and there is a chemical reaction. Some fish live and thrive in hard water like the Lake Malawi/Tanaganyka/Victoria and central American cichlids. Aswell as Mollys.
