Why do you want to lower it. What fish are you/do you intend to keep. What is your ph at the moment.

from what i know its more important to keep ph stable rather than trying to higher or lower it

well the reason is my ph at the moment is 7.8 and i need it to be 7.4 for another type of fish i may get so i was wondering how i would do it.

its a really bad idea to try and lower your ph but if you do really have to do it then i would do it over a period of a few weeks if possible.how long has your tank been set up and do you know the kh of your tank? What type of fish are you planning on getting? also read orca's artical on ph it may help.

I would have to agree with karen on this. If you are unsure what you are doing u could end up killing your fish. Even what may seem like a small change in PH could be life threating for the fish, any changes you do, have to be done over a long period of time(eg. very gradually). Because your water has a PH of 7.8, i suspect you problely have quite high GH and KH. High GH & KH in your water can make it even more difficult to change PH and keep it stable. But if your determined, here are some of the ways to lower PH.
Filtering water over peat Add bogwood to the tank Inject carbon dioxide CO2 Use a commercial acid buffer Water changes with softened water or RO water
