To cycle a aquarium u need time at least 3-4 weeks worth, as for food that all depends on what fish u are getting, most fish will do well on flakes.

spitfire have you done any research into fish keeping or owning an aquarium? if not that is the first thing i would tell you that you need to do. after that to go and talk to you local fish store or where you plan on getting you fish from. after that you will need 1. filter 2. heater 3.themometer and a minimum of 4 test kits as follows: pH, ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte,. at least 2 buckets and a syphon tube and dechlronator for use when you do water changes.

Stress coat is a water conditioner that removes chlorine. U should never change anymore than 20% of your tank water in a day. Have u already used dechlorinator in your tank water already?

No u don't have to empty the tank, Just pour the correct amount of stress coat for 100l of water into your tank and give it a stir. Plus turn off your heater, pump and lights before u go sticking your hand into the water. Think First, Stay Safe.

ok i will do that.
when i shud i change the water in my tank?
i went to the pet shop today and i asked him about cycling he said
if i brought my filter in to him he would put in 1 of his tanks for me for
a week and he said i could just buy some neons and put them in my
tank and they would cycle the tank

U should take him up on his offer, there are not many lfs owners that would do that, That would cycle your filter alot quicker. U should do a 20% water change once a week, Neons tetras are lovely little fish i have some myself, Also u should buy at least a dozen because they are a shouling fish. Do u have soft water because they do better in soft water.

Just ask your lfs owner what type of water he keeps them in u might find that his water is hard too, They will do ok in hard water, but they do better in soft water.

Maybe a couple of malawi cichlids might be more suitable for u because your waters hard. I don't know that much about them myself because i keep soft water fish. The man to ask would be orca, I believe he keeps them.

i would take up the pet shops owners offer it would be a lot quicker than cycling it yourself. As for him telling you to buy some neons to cycle your tank is not a good idea IMO they are not good for newly set up tank and would not be able to handle the whole cycling process. If you do plan on doing a fish cycle they best fish IMO is zebra danios an excellent fish to start off with but then again need to be kept in a group of six or more and they can be fin nippers.
