spitfire, Neons can handle hard water (30dGH) and PH up to 8,0 if acclimatised, but prefer peat filtered water with hardness 10dGH and PH of 7,0 with temp 68-79F (24-26C). I see in one of your other posts that your water is soft? May I suggest that as this is your first cycle that you get +/- 4 feeder Goldfish to do the cycle and if (heaven forbid) something untowards happens ---------? I see you have taken your filter to the petshop, thats good but you must remember petshops don't feed the fish like we do and as such very little poo is produced (vital for the cycling process). With regards to Malawis, they require at least (maximum maintenance) a tank with a length of 1m and volume of around 200lt (there are smaller species but this is just a average). Water requirements are PH neutral - alkaline, Hardness medium - hard (15dGH). Malawis require plenty of hiding places with sandy bottom. jackpike, Yes cichlids are my interest (CA/SA) I have still to try with Malawi's, saying that I have a few friends who keep them.
