When I am preparing for a water change, I fill a plastic bucket of tap water and leave it sit in a press for 24 hours. This allows the water to reach room temperature and apparently the chlorine will also evaporate (thought this up myself, isn’t I great!). I then treat the water with the usual drops (Stress Zyme, Stress Coat, Tonic Salts and Leaf Zone). I then siphon off the tank water from the substrate level into an identical bucket and siphon in the new water immediately afterwards, letting it splash onto the water surface from a few inches to increase oxygen content. This method seems to be very stress-free for the fish and removes lots of dirt from the gravel. It has worked great for me for years.
Any opinions or comments? Anybody do the same or have other suggestions?
Daniel.

about a third of all fishkeepers do the same as you daniel although since you obviously don't want to use de-chorinator, what is the point of adding all those other chems? truthfully, they won't make a difference to healthy fish and if your fish are not healthy, then you need to adress the problem...

Hi and Thanks for the advice.
I'd rather not use them. But I need the leaf zone to feed the plants and the tonic salts to make the water mildly brackish for my archer fish. Apparently normal freshwater fish don't mind this? The Stress Coat and Stress Zyme are meant to neutralise the chlorine and add healthy bacteria. My tank is set up over two years so I might stop using the last two treatments. I'd rather use no chemicals if there was a better way. The fish are very healthy, I have not added new ones in nearly a year and none have died.
Any thoughts?

Stress Coat and Stress Zyme do NOT newtralise the chlorine! they stimulate the fish's skin into producing more mucus (or slime) it might be better for you to use marine salt instead of tonic salt (they have different minerals in them) but if the tonic is working, then you could just stick with it i have exactly the same point of view as you concerning chems, which is why i use a DIY CO2 thingy which it only took me 10 min to make and works better then any ferts! If you're interested in how to make one, e-mail me
