What has happened to my plants? done a water change last friday as usual. except cleaned the tank and changed half of my filters. i have record 60 tank. and moved Ecinodorus to the other end of the tank.added tetra plant 'plantamin' the first time i have used this in the tank usualy use tropica fert. now only thees plants look like they are suffering from posion from what i can see in one of my books. leaves are turing brown and yellow. only other difference is that after filter change ammonia level went up to .25. have never had ammonia in my tank before. could it be ammonia poisioning? all the other plants look ok and have grown since the cutting back i did at the water change. any ideas?

i changed have of the blue filter and half of the green filter. advised to do this instaed of changing all at once which made sense to do. reason for the change was they were realy bunged up even after reqular rinsing in old tank water. did water test tonight and all water stats are back to normal.ph=7. ammonia=0. nitrIte=0. nitrAte=10. po4=0. fe=.25. co2=15ppm. dont think they will last out the weekend to honest. weired.

thats weird i cant understand how the ammonia just shot up like that.im thinking maybe it has something to do with the new fert you used.

to be honest i was thinking the same. that it could be the fert. only reason i changed the fert was because i got tetra cryto root fert and thought the best thing to do was to use the same make instead of using two different types. but that was the only different thing i did. so looks like it could be that unless anyone else has any ideas?

Sounds strange but it can be if you put too much in it happened to me before ...but now i only use sachem iron, because that is all the plants need ...iron. Take the carbon out too you if you have it in as the carbon will absorb the food your putting in for the plants. Carbon only lasts for a short time best not to run the two together ,also fish shops will try to sell you everything to feed your plants with, when all you need is iron hope this helps a little

thanks for that janette. dont think i overdosed, only put what it stated to do but could it also be amix of the two togther do you think? only just getting into plants to be honest so still learning. you say only iron! do you need substrate? i think thats right or is it laterate? to feed the roots?

lol i know what your saying if you dint have the substrate your plant would all be floating ones :r: if your tank is mature enough there will be lot of nutrient's ...ie...poo to feed the plants for a short time i just add a little iron now and then when i do a water change how many plants and what size tank do you have and what filtration have you got??

already had a few floaters. have to get bigger nails, haha. record 60 50L.15 plants and the normal inbuilt filter system that came with the tank. what does lol mean?

Hi mr algae, U said u had rearranged your tank and replaced half the sponges in your filter. Rearranging your tank and maybe disturbing your subtrate which would affect the nitrifying bacteria on the subtrate. Replacing half the sponges in your filter would cut down the bacteria in the filter by half for a short time. In my opinion doing all this at the same time has led to your jump in the ammonia levels. i would do water changes every day until the numbers of nitrifying bacteria grow back to where they were and they handle the ammonia output of your tank. Just moving the plant could be the cause of its problems. Also u can over fertilize plants and kill them.

bit late now they all dead. lol. substrate gets moved at least twice a week when i do a gravel clean. ammomia levels within the limits, was just a shock to see them as never had them. only put amount of fert stated to do. but still think had something to do with the new fert as moved other plants around and didnt affect them

Should u vacuum or not, if u look on the internet, read fish keeping books or magazines, You'll soon find out that it is a hottly debated subject. The "aye's" say that regular vacuuming removes rotten plants , food and the muck in the subtrate which helps lower nitrate. The "no's" say that it removes food for the bacteria and damages them as well which could cause a tank to crash. Because u also changed half your filters at the same time I believe this has happened to u. I decided to take a middle line on this. I vacuum half my tank once every 4 weeks. when i am doing a water change and i see dead plants leaves or food on the subtrate. I'll try to siphon it without touching the substrate

do i, dont i, yes or no. i know what you mean that was one of my topics as to who is right. never had a hobby with so many conflicts as to right or wrong. sorry but i prob should have explained better. wen i said gravel clean i should have said a hoover the gravel, wasnt a dig deep all over clean up. have to clean often cos have so many fish that i was advised was ok when set up the tank and i knew no better. 30 neons 3 rainbows and mr pleco in a 2ft 50l tank takes some cleaning up after them all. but after all that have only lost one neon in all this time and that was down yo neon tet diesese.
