hi jon, when i was working on orchards back home we would cut the stem just below a node(the place where the leaves are attached to stem),any part of the stem below the node will just die off and rot, causing fungus, disease, etc, and in an aquarium,i would imagine it wont exactly help to improve water quality.the roots should come out from the node.break off the leaves from the closest node to the cut.there are other ways such as leaf cuttings, but it depends on the plant species, and i havnt done it with aqyatics.hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

if its java fern, then daughter plants will appear on the leaves, which can be removed and planted on.my java fern is doing this madly and i havnt even got round to attaching it to bogwood yet, just weighed down by lead. indian fern reproduces very similarily, but VERY prolifically,if used floating(great for fry cover and shy fish)no need to touch it,just let it multiply and thin it out.seems to enjoy a strong light.one thing i noticed with it,as soon as i put an airstone in tank,it shrunk away and had very limited growth,no reproduction.
