jon, Which parrot are you refering to? the Blood parrot (I've often kept two of them together with no problem) in fact I know a FS that has 14 in one of the display tanks (all around 6"). Then you get the Parrot cichlid (Hoplarchus psittacus) which can grow to 35cm+, I personally have no experience with them. If you require any more info let me know and I will see what I can dig up. A photo of Hoplarchus psittacus.

Red Blood Parrot History
The red blood parrot was first "created" in Taiwan back in the late eighties. Little is known about it outside Taiwan. According to Cher Chan in "Cichlids in Taiwan", it first appeared in 1986. The parents of the hybrid was a mystery back then, now many fish farms in Taiwan can produce it from a male "Cichlasoma citrinellum" (midas cichlid) and a female "Cichliasoma synspilum" (redhead cichlid).
Parentage
Here's a run down on the possibilities of the parentage. Although I believe it is the citrinellum + synspilum, as stated above, all of the following have valid arguments:
Midas Cichlid (Cichlasoma citrinellum)+ Redhead Cichlid(Cichliasoma synspilum) Red Devil (cichlasoma labiatum) + Gold Severum (Cichlasoma severum) Red Devil (cichlasoma labiatum) + Green Severum (Cichlasoma severum) Red Devil (cichlasoma labiatum) + Redhead (cichlasoma synspilum) Red Devil (cichlasoma labiatum) + Gold Severum (Cichlasoma severum) +Cichlasoma "theraps" fenestratum

ok thats good to no but what other fish would go well with them? This will depend on what size tank you have. A pair should be kept in nothing smaller than a 55g tank. Cory's kept in numbers of three or more. Pl*cos of the smaller kind. Large tetra's Sevs no more than two. This is the combo of fish I had with my BP's in my 55g tank and it worked well for me. The main thing is don't buy fish that are bite sized or they quickly become a snack. Hiding places are needed for the BP's. Nice sized clay pots work well. Bogwood, too. It will be needed for your Pl*co's if you get them.

I absolutely hate these fish. The are a monstroscity. Most are died and tatooed. The have terrible problems swimming later on in life due to their curved spine which puts pressure on their swimbladder and alot of them suffer from health problems.
Thats just my opinion but I know real fish shops who will not sell them.

Thats just my opinion but I know real fish shops who will not sell them. A lot of people share your feelings and a lot don't. Such is life. There are a lot are tatooed and dyed BP's. Which is wrong to do to any fish IME they are great fish. I bought 2 of them 7 years ago. Two years ago I had to find homes for them because my health didn't allow me to do the up keep of the large tanks I had. To date these fish are still healthy and happy (a friend has them and I see them very often.) There's been no swimbaldder issues or bad health for either of them. We all have fish don't like and wouldn't have. Like I said, such is life. Myself, I don't care what others opinions are about the fish I keep because it is my choice to keep them.

As a newbie here as well as a new blood parrot owner,I hope to gain a little insight. I purchased my fella on 10-08 (48hr ago) ever since I introduced him to his new home he has gone into hidng! What scares me is he turns on his side and scoots up under the bubble disk and then he stays on his side! This is not my 1st fish, I have an African Cichlid tank in my Family room (55gal). Ihave another 55 Central American cichlid tank in my living room and a 29gal speciality tank in my bedroom this is the BP new home in which I have 2 med silver Angelfish. 2 panda corys. 2 sm algae eatrs. Is this behavior normal?

Hi pugrbos I would belive it to be normal as he is a new fish he will need time to settle in your tank. Some fish take a little longer than others,i dont think its anything to worry about.

Is this behavior normal? This is normal for the BP. He will settle in. Be sure you have plenty of hiding places for him. They love clay pots. He will soon come out and be your best friend. The trick with these guys to to teach them that you are the food giver and friend. You will most likely see him sleeping on his head, side or any other strange combo of ways. Another thing that happens are black markings (not to be confused with Black Spot Diease.) this is a sign of stress. Once the stress stops so will the black spots. If he doesn't have tank mates get him some. This will help bring him out in the open.

Although I have been licky in only having LFS who would not stock dyed fish. Personally I do not hate the fish because the poor things have never done anything... but I do hate the person who created them for a number of reasons I won't be going into right now.
