Look at them from the top. If you have a mature mixed sex group you will be able to see the difference: females will be fuller.

Karen's advice is one way. All Corys look kind of like a teardrop if you look top down. (By the way - good luck getting that view!) Anyway - the females will be obviously fatter around the middle. In adults, they're also quite a bit longer. One other excellent indicator are the fins - the dorsal (on the back - like the shark fins in the movies) in particular. The females will always be shorter - and often will be rounder. Males have elongated pointy dorsals. Hope that helps!

I have 4 catfish, they were given to me as fry but they tend to hide behind the rock most of the time

I'm Kat, not Karen hun the second method i have found to be extremely unreliable... most of my males and females have the sale length fins, same pointedness and are about the same size.
